Opal Nopal belongs to my archive of previously realised creations and bears witness to a line of research that can evolve from one piece of jewellery to another. Each new project is redesigned, taking into account the person, the proportions, the way the jewellery is worn, the available stones and its actual use. A reference point can therefore become the starting point for a different solution, consistent with the wearer and the new design context.
The project stems from viewing other Opal Nopal creations in my archive, in particular the ring and the pending. Following that language, the clients asked us to develop a pair of earrings, keeping the reference to the prickly pear without turning it into a simple transposition. I therefore worked on the relationship between plant elements, stones and movement, adapting the composition to the different scale and the way an earring frames the face.
I developed the earrings using 3D modelling and prototyping, prior to lost-wax casting. The 18-carat rose gold holds a natural Ethiopian opal, natural ruby and citrine; the prong-free setting integrates the stones into the structure without interrupting the continuity of the design. In my workshop in Altamura, I personally oversee polishing and quality control, checking the construction, finishes and consistency between the two pieces of the pair.
