Four footprints gathered almost in secret become the central material of the story. The daughters look for their father’s, then place it alongside their own and their mother’s: not an invented emblem, but four real presences. In the twins, these traces enter the daily life of those who wear them, precisely through an accessory that already belonged to them by habit. Meaning thus arises from the familiar gesture and the continuity of use.
Family footprint belongs to my archive of completed works and documents a project born from people, signs and precise circumstances. For a new work I start again from the history, the use, the proportions and the materials most coherent with the person who will wear it.
The project originated for Father's Day. The two daughters organised a little trick to obtain their father's fingerprint and combine it with their own and their mother's. They thus handed me four real traces of the family. Since he usually wore cufflinks, that gesture suggested a form capable of accompanying him in his daily life. There was no need to add a symbol: the personal material was already present in the fingerprints.
I developed Family Footprint in 18-carat rose and white gold. 3D modelling and prototyping allowed me to verify the relationship between the bezel, central surface and proportions prior to lost-wax casting. I then oversaw the polishing and quality control, keeping the distinction between the two metals clear. The construction had to remain understated, precise and suitable for a formal accessory worn frequently.
