Coralli di famiglia belongs to my archive and documents an intervention built on pre-existing materials and a specific situation. In every new project, I evaluate what can be conserved, transformed or redesigned, considering proportions, the condition of the materials, use and the individual. In my workshop in Altamura, I oversee this phase directly so that the result stems from what already exists, rather than simply imitating its outcome.
The project stems from the restoration of old family jewellery: a broken necklace and a cameo brooch. The starting point was not to keep them unchanged, but to recognise what deserved to continue being worn. I therefore reassembled materials and shapes into a new bracelet, giving the cameo the leading role and building around it a weave that brings the coral back into daily contact with the body.
I worked with 18-carat yellow gold and natural coral, combining traditional wax modelling, prototyping and lost-wax casting to build the settings around the cameo. Hand-engraving defines certain sections of the mounting, while tubular mesh stringing arranges the micro-beads into a compact and flexible band. Polishing and quality control complete the piece, checking continuity, flexibility and finishes.
Every review reflects a real commission: the initial consultation, the listening process, the definition of the project, the anticipation and the moment the finished piece becomes part of the client’s life.
