Manual setting of a sapphire on an artisanal ring

Stone setting course

In person at the atelier · Maximum 2 participants

For beginners and experienced students

In my goldsmith's workshop, where I design and create custom jewellery, these evaluations are part of my daily work. During the course, I share my method with you, explaining not only how to perform a particular process, but also how to choose the most suitable solution and monitor its results.

Through demonstrations and practical exercises, you can deepen your knowledge of two distinct processes: traditional stone setting under the microscope and Gravermax-assisted stone setting. The lessons are tailored to your experience and are conducted with a maximum of two participants.

Course program

The program is defined based on your experience, training objectives, and chosen duration. The exercises progressively cover the processes and technical evaluations necessary to achieve a precise, secure setting suited to the gemstone and the piece of jewellery.

Training activities may include:

  • Understanding and organising the stone-setting workstation.

  • Preparation and control of tools.

  • Observation of gems and settings.

  • Preparing stone seats and studying setting techniques.

  • Practice with bezels and prongs.

  • Pavé and micro-pavé stone setting, according to the chosen programme.

  • Working with jewellery settings of different shapes and sizes.

  • Checking the fixing of the gems and the finishes.

Stone setting under the microscope

The course develops the control of inlaying processes through the enlarged observation of details. The exercises are organized progressively, from the preparation of the frame to the fixing techniques, with attention to the precision of the gesture and the quality of the result.

Stone setting with Gravermax

The course is dedicated to the use of the Gravermax system in stone setting and microsetting. The exercises allow the development of tool control and the tackling of increasingly difficult machining tasks, in relation to the student’s preparation. The microscope can also be used during this course, as a support for observation and control of the machining process.

How the lessons are conducted

The teaching is predominantly practical. After each demonstration, you work on your own station, through exercises suited to your level of experience.

I will accompany you in the observation of the gem and the setting, in the evaluation of the craftsmanship and in the control of the result. When an error emerges, we analyze together from which phase it originates and how to correct it.

The lessons accommodate a maximum of two students, with two stations available. In the short courses we focus on specific technical objectives; the longer ones allow for exploring different settings and techniques, dedicating more time to practice and perfecting the movement.

Intensive schedule

Classes are held for eight hours, with a separate lunch break, concentrated on the agreed days. The schedule is determined based on the chosen number of hours.

Standard schedule

Two weekly sessions of four hours each. Dates and times are agreed upon before registration.

Duration and fees

You can choose between two training courses, each with its own program and dedicated price list: traditional stone setting under the microscope and Gravermax-assisted stone setting. The microscope is an instrument for observation and control that can be used in both courses. The Gravermax, on the other hand, introduces a system of assisted machining.

Before registration, we define together the technique, the number of hours and the frequency that best suit your preparation and your goals. The fees are per individual participant. Materials and any personal tools are counted separately.

Materials and equipment

The fee includes the lessons and the use of the studio’s workstations and equipment provided in the program. During the training, you can use manual burins, microscopes, and Gravermax according to the agreed itinerary. Gemstones, settings, materials for the exercises, and any personal tools are at your own expense. Before signing up, you will receive a list of the necessary materials and their costs.
